The Beginnings of a Different Bank

What goes into the only bank you’ll ever need? Over a century of successful planning, dedication, and local decision making, for openers.

Troy Bank & Trust was organized September 5, 1906, with capital stock of $50,000.00. Among the organizers and first directors were Charles Henderson, J.C. Henderson, W.C. Windham, and W.C. Black. The bank was first located on North Three Notch Street but moved in 1908 to 70 West Court Square.

On the Move

In 1926, Troy Bank & Trust moved to the northwest corner of the square. In 1963, a new location was established at 300 North Three Notch Street and that remained the main office until 1992. At that time, the building became the downtown branch and a new main office building was constructed on U.S. Highway 231, where it remains today. A branch was established within the Goshen co-op in 1988.

Growing Branches

We expanded to Ariton in 2003 and to Brundidge in 2004. In July 2008 Troy Bank & Trust merged with The Peoples Bank of Coffee County, which created three new branches located in Elba, New Brockton, and Enterprise. We branched to Dothan in 2015, to Auburn-Opelika in 2017, and opened our second location in Dothan midtown in 2020.

Leadership

The first president of the bank was Governor Charles Henderson. He continued to serve as president until his death in 1937. Lane Enzor became president in 1937, followed by Corley Chapman, Sr., and James Fort. In June 1982, M. Douglas Mims became president and CEO. Gary Guthrie was named president and CEO in September, 1997. Following Mr. Guthrie’s retirement, Jeff Kervin was named president & CEO in September 2010.

Upon the death of Governor Charles Henderson in 1937, his last will and testament created a perpetual, charitable trust commonly known as the “Charles Henderson Trust”. The will transferred Governor Henderson’s 51.12% majority ownership of the TB&T stock into the trust to be managed and administered perpetually by Troy Bank & Trust as the trustee. The will also stated that the Troy Bank & Trust company stock can never be sold. That means that we will always be Troy Bank & Trust…the only bank you’ll ever need!
